Time Lapse Photography

What do you need for time lapse photography?
  • Camera
  • Lens
  • Tripod
  • Memory card
  • Remote

What settings should I use?
I would suggest a shutter speed fast enough to show motion of speeding objects, or a fast shutter speed to freeze the action. Your chosen shutter speed will help decide the frequency of each shot. In the following example I used 1 sec exposures spaced out by a second. At the end of the video I'm using 4 sec exposures with a 2 second delay. This is not the rule, and there are no rules. Just go out there and have fun and experiment.

What remote did you use?
I used what is referred to as an intervalometer. This remote switch has a self-timer, interval timer, long exposure timer and exposure-count. I used the Canon TC-80N3

Tim Mantoani - Focus on your Passion: Finding Yourself in Your Photography.

This is a great interview I found on a random blog by PhotoShelter. I found this interview by Allen Murabayashi of Tim Mantoani thought provoking and inspirational. He shares techniques, advice and stories. This is nearly an hour and a half, but I wouldn't have edited any of it out.

Modulation Transfer Function

Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) charts are one of the key components that lens designers utilize when designing or updating a lens. It is a chart speaking to the translucency of a lens. Specifically the lenses contrast and sharpness. It can also tell you the quality of the Bokeh. Bokeh is the Japanese term for the out of focus bits.

The vertical axis represents the transmittance of light. The maximum value of the vertical axis is 100% light transmittance. Glass is not completely translucent, so it impossible for a lens to achieve 100%.

The horizontal axis represents the distance from the center of the image to the outer edge. Some manufacturers measure this slightly differently. Graphs should only be compared by lenses of the same manufacturer and of similar focal lengths. Telephoto lenses normally have better MTF graphs compared to wide angle lenses. If the lines are relatively flat you will have a lens that performs better than ones that
sporadically decreases from left to right.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
There are eight lines on the graph and half of them are thick and the other half are thin. Half are solid and the other half are dashed lines. The solid lines are referred to as “Sagittal lines” and they are parallel to the diagonal of the image. The dashed lines are referred to as “Meridionial lines” and they run perpendicular to the Sagittal lines. The Meridional and Sagital lines are grouped together in a pattern and the sharpness and contrast of these lines give us our data points. The lines are also colored to represent the different apertures.

illustration of sagital and meridonial lines for FX

Putting it all together

The thickness of the lines refers to the spatial frequency or lines per mm. The thick lines that represent the higher spatial frequency (30 lines/mm) tells us how well a lenses resolving power is. Think of this as sharpness. The thin lines show lower spatial frequency of around 10 lines per mm and can attest to a lenses contrast. If the dashed and solid lines are similar in slope and distance to each other than the lens should have decent bokeh.

The Big Square Memory Card

CompactFlash Cards are one of the oldest flash memory card types still in use today. It was designed for high speed and capacity for forward compatibility. It has also maintained its popularity through reliability. It is a solid state type of memory which means there is no moving parts, so they are shock proof. Unlike the type 2 CF cards that are used in iPod Mini. The type 2 is slightly thicker and not commonly found.

CompactFlash and many other memory cards have become confusing with advances in marketing and technology. Lighthaus Camera sells Delkin Device memory cards. Why? Well first of all they have a lifetime warranty. Second the cards are marked very clearly. Many other companies will only display the read speed, because it is the higher speed. Delkin is very clear about how fast their cards work in reading and writing.

Starting at the top of the packaging there is a CF for CompactFlash. CompactFlash was designed by a group of international companies, and they formed the CompactFlash Association. They now decide on industry standards and approve of new formats like XQD for the Nikon D4.

Most CF cards have one speed equivalence. It is displayed as ###X ie.(133x, 305X, 500X) This number is based off of the original CD(Compact Disk) transfer rate of 150 kByte/s. If your memory card is 500X and multiply that by 150 kByte/s. You have 75,000 kByte/s transfer rate for this memory card. That would be the equivalent of 75 MB/s for the read speed of a 500x card.

Sometimes the card might say UDMA6 on it. UDMA stands for Ultra Direct Memory Access. This is the protocol for transferring data from memory to the device. It was a breakthrough in data transfer, because it bypassed the CPU. Huh? It means it transfers your images using a good method.

If you hate using CF cards, because they are difficult to insert into the camera; you would be in good company. There is one universal visual indicator though. Each side of the memory card has a groove. The two grooves have different widths. The camera will have two rails to fit those grooves. Its not easy, but it does avoid the guessing game.

The groove on the right side is slightly wider.

Defy Convention...be a Rebel

Canon has recently announced the latest in their long and extremely popular line of EOS Rebel digital SLR cameras...the Rebel T4i!

The Power to Create

The fans have been waiting long enough.  The next power player in Canon's lineup has been announced:
Presenting the "popular before it was even announced" Canon EOS 5D Mark III!

This impressive new camera improves on an already successful and effective system.  The 5D Mark II was a landmark camera for Canon with its high-ISO, low noise capabilities and hi-res 1080p video recording.  For a while, there really was no equal to the 5D Mark II.  Improving on that system seemed like it would be hard to do, but Canon has done it.

With the inclusion of the 61-point AF system (the same system that's being included in the 1D X), the 5D Mark III promises to be a precise tool for the most demanding photographer.  And having its frame rate bumped up from 3.9 to 6.0 means that capturing the precise moment just got a whole lot easier.

Expected to launch by the end of March, this camera is likely to fly out of inventory before it even has the chance to see a shelf.  As with all new SLR launches, Lighthaus Camera is already taking pre-orders for the 5D Mark III, and trade-ins are always welcome!  Please call or stop by your local Lighthaus Camera location for more info on how to get your hands on one!

Click here to read Canon's full press release on the 5D Mark III.
